  28. No.  Only actual behavior in a real work environment can show that.
  29. Many people even fool themselves.  So a good assesment requires a
  30. probationary period.

  35. Since my experience covers both the trained and the self-taught, I
  36. can say it is very easy to miss the obvious if you teach yourself,
  37. especially if you are creative.  The degree shows you have at least
  38. been exposed to the basics, have at least the minimal ability to
  39. follow directions.  I am constantly amazed at how rare that ability
  40. is.

  45. Since you are asking, the worst spaghetti code I have ever seen 
  46. came from the self-taught.  As well as the second worst.  The 
  47. third worst came from someone who previously had been an assembler
  48. programmer.  A hint about appropriate training there.

  50. Modern programming mostly requires discipline and the ability to
  51. work in teams.  The day of the lone cowboy is past.
  52.  
  53. I do know a few of the best that are self-taught.  They are not the
  54. general case.  Only one where I would willingly modify his code for pay.

  56. Now there's a metric - how likely others are to want to dig into the
  57. code.
